Singapore Government To Run Another Bug Bounty

The Singapore government is planning another bug bounty programme to identify potential security holes across nine of its online digital services as well as ICT systems that facilitate high user interaction. Depending on the severity of bug identified, between US$250 and US$10,000 will be paid out for each unique, validated security vulnerability report.
Led by Singapore Government Technology Agency (GovTech) and Cyber Security Agency, the bounty programme was scheduled to run from July to August 2019, according to HackerOne. This is the third bug-hunting exercise the bounty platform will be running for the Singapore government, following to others involving GovTech and the Ministry of Defence (Mindef).
Some 200 international hackers and 100 local hackers would be invited to participate in the latest bug hunt, with participants invited based on their previous performance metrics on HackerOne's platform. Results were slated to be unveiled in September 2019.
GovTech's previous bug bounty programme had involved 400 local and international hackers, who collectively identified 26 vulnerabilities and earned almost US$12,000 for their effort. Mindef's HackerOne programme in early-2018 led to the discovery of 35 vulnerabilities
HackerOne's director of programme management Paul Griffin said: "Tapping the skilled and global hacker community is the most efficient way to approach security testing. The latest bug bounty program continues to signal momentum in the constant battle against malicious actors on the internet."
Singapore's public sector has been the target of cybercriminals in recent years that, amongst others, compromised the personal data of 1.5 million SingHealth patients and 850 national servicemen and employees. Security lapses also affected 14,200 individuals with HIV and 808,201 blood donors, exposing their personal information.
CSA last month released a report that revealed a a drop in the number of common cyber threats last year, but projected more frequent data breaches and disruptive attacks against the cloud in the near future. It noted that there were 605 instances of website defacements last year compared to 2,040 in 2017, with most of the affected websites owned by small and midsize businesses (SMBs).

Goodwill Hunting: How Good Intentions Can Go Awry

When Campbell’s announced in 2012 that it was buying Bolthouse Farms for $1.55 billion, the company said it was part of a strategy to grow in dressings and beverages. After some missteps along the way, Campbell’s just sold that operation for $500 million– about a billion dollars less than it paid. The buyer: an investor group including Bolthouse’s former CEO.
What keeps you up at night? Consolidation is a big force in food and beverage these days as many firms expand, often growing rapidly through deals. One big worry for some CEOs, though, may be that a big deal will turn into a big drag on earnings. The Bolthouse deal resulted in a $1 billion hit to the profit and loss statement for Campbell’s, which call ill afford further write downs. This write down is only one of many in food and beverage, as tastes and trends change, and goodwill can go with it.
Goodwill in accounting is created by the amount of money paid for an acquisition in excess of the fair value of the net assets acquired. Customers like your brand. And that has value, even if it’s intangible. But goodwill requires annual re-evaluation from a GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) standpoint. Privately owned companies have an option to amortize goodwill over ten years. If a company does not opt to amortize and instead keeps the value on its balance sheet, that’s when goodwill can get better or go bad, as happened with Bolthouse and some other big food and beverage deals. Kraft Heinz, for instance, took a $15.4 billion write down on brands such as Kraft and Oscar Mayer.
Writing down goodwill hurts stock prices and financial statements. Companies have to be prudent about the value of what they’re paying for and what they do with a brand once they own it. It can come back and hurt them in the future.
While writing down goodwill is not a good thing, it’s not all bad. Goodwill for tax purposes can be written off over 15 years. Under adverse conditions, or if a brand declines in sales, which can occur when popularity or consumer preferences change, goodwill can take a big hit. And lately big changes in tastes have been widespread in food and beverage, making the industry particularly vulnerable to the goodwill bug. Consumer preferences for old, stodgy brands have changed dramatically. If companies don’t respond, they not only lose sales volume, they can be hit by a goodwill impairment. Companies that go into brick and mortar and buy manufacturing plants, which they then may close if they’re not operating efficiently, also are subject to impairment charges.
Other food and beverage giants have taken big goodwill hits lately. Kellogg created a reorganization plan for its North American operations, before selling its cookie and snack business to Italy-based Ferrero Group. Even before the sale, Kellogg took a $35 million hit on its profit and loss statement, related to that business.
Buying a brand can still be a great way to grow, but any acquisitions or sales have to be closely monitored for value, long-term prospects, and the impact they could have on financial statements. Food and beverage’s story now is, in part, about deals and growth, but brand value can expand or diminish. Companies have to make deals work, and when they don’t, the goodwill write downs can be waiting in the wings. And even if goodwill, in theory, is intangible, big changes in tastes and trends can be very real. Good luck, deal hunting

Top 10 Best Fortnite Prop Hunt Maps

Prop Hunt is one of the latest and most entertaining game modes introduced to Fortnite. Tied to Creative Mode, this custom game focuses on one team of players attempting to hide in the environment while others are searching for them. This creates some chaotic and hilarious moments, especially if you have a big group of users. Since Epic Games is only showing off one map for this mode, we decided to highlight some of the best Prop Hunt maps you need to try.
Remember, to activate these maps you will need to load up Creative. Now go to any portal, access the rift’s menu, and then input any of the codes below. This will swap the maps out, allowing you try a different prop hunt level. Now just enter the rift and you will be warped to your map of choice!
Here are the top 10 best Fortnite Prop Hunt maps you need to try:
(This list is in no particular order.)
1. Swimming Pool
Creator: FortniteartCode: 3487-1374-0131
One of my personal favorites, Fortniteart’s Swimming Pool is a condensed, but intricately designed map. Boasting a nice little main street, basketball court, loading dock, gym, and a tiny park, you can easily find new places to hid each map. Items have enough variation to make it difficult to spot something out of place. Yet, the level is small enough to still give the Hunters a decent chance at discovering users hiding in plain sight. If you’re going to play any alternate map, we suggest starting with Fortniteart’s Swimming Pool.
2. Warlock’s Graveyard
Creator: ShinoharaCode: 6180-5637-0525
Looking for something a bit spookier? Warlock’s Graveyard is a Prop Hunt map broken across multiple floating islands. This adds a second layer of danger to the game since you can fall to your death. Every island is full of objects you can disguise yourself as and the time of day makes hunting quite challenging. Hunters have limited ammo, so they will have to be a bit more careful when tracking down props. Remember to use those bounce pads so you can jump from island to island!
3. Asteroid Arcade
Creator: Shaverman46Code: 1534-1221-2242
Perhaps one of the hardest Prop Hunt maps for hunters, Asteroid Arcade is a dark, neon colored maze filled with games and prizes. There are a ton of items you can disguise yourself as, making it difficult to hunt the props by yourself. However, the open rooms and confined space limits the props ability to move without being seen. Featuring a shooting gallery, prize room, and multiple arcade cabinets, this map ooze’s 1980s. Consider hiding in the shooting gallery as a target if you want to taunt your opponent!
4. Western World
Creator: ZacknabootCode: 3541-6722-7262
Perfect for big groups, Western World is a desert level that has some entertaining, unique areas to hide. Despite being pretty big, there is a nice balance of props that rewards smart positioning and use of the environment. There are a lot of places to hide, so it may take a few rounds before the hunters really know what to look for. But, any level that lets you disguise yourself as a dinosaur and not make it obvious is a win in our book. Just make sure to check the rocks around the small pond, since it’s a superb hiding spot.
5. The Villa V2
Creator: Expa_aztoxCode: 3060-9697-9579
Another favorite, The Villa V2 is a sprawling estate boasting multiple rooms, themes, and items to transform into. The centerpiece is a large mansion that has everything from a beautiful inner garden, arcade, and even it’s own store! Behind the building are the pool and archery range which offers some clever items to transform into. Even though the 13-minute timer may seem high, it’s needed given how sprawling this level is. Expa_aztox’s map is perfect for replaying more than once since the level’s size constantly offers new places to hide.
6. Modern Museum
Creator: mseymour7Code: 1646-1866-1963
Great for smaller groups, the Modern Museum is a large building filled with ropes off artifacts and rare treasures. A fantastic mix of big open rooms with limited items to turn into and small stores with tons of potential, Modern Museum is perfect for those who want to put their hiding skills to the test.
Being able to naturally blend in with the rest of the exhibits can make or break a successful round, so take your time when deciding on what to be. Another unique aspect is you get to use Grapple Guns, allowing for some flashy and stylish maneuvers through the two-story building.
7. Office
Creator: TollmoliaCode: 8378-7952-8626
Prop Hunt veterans may recognize this map as a recreation of the Garry’s Mod map of the same name. A claustrophobic level, Office is a multi-floor building complete with a parking garage and multiple rooms. While you sadly cannot enter every area in the structure, Office is superb for people sick of bigger, more open maps. This is a very challenging and intense level that will put your hiding skills to the test. Don’t expect to move much after you find your initial hiding spot.
8. Mega Movie Theater
Creator: HfdgamerCode: 0532-8821-6842
One of the best on our list, Mega Movie Theater is more than just a single building with a few movie screens. Hfdgamer’s medium sized level is a small shopping square with multiple stores and places to hide. Coins are fairly placed, forcing props to go out of their way, without making it to obvious. Mega Mall certainly encourages constantly swapping disguises, which makes more kinetic gameplay moments. This is a map that shouldn’t fly under your radar.
9. Toy Story Prop Hunt
Creator: TrizbearCode: 5263-5778-8691
Just in time for the new film, Toy Story Prop Hunt shrinks the player down to the size of a bug. Consisting of a single room filled with toys, oversized furniture, and a dol house, players must quickly hide among the scattered objects. Despite being set in a single roo, Toy Story Prop Hunt has a remarkable amount of variation.
There are also some fun nods to the film, such as a massive Mr. Potato Head figure that looms over the room. If you’ve been feeling nostalgic, hop into this room and live the life of Woody or Buzz Lightyear.
10. Props on a Plane
Creator: PuzzlerCode: 8601-7555-4745
One of the cleverest maps we’ve come across, Props on a Plane is set on a small, two-floor passenger plane. While the limited running room makes for less than exciting chases, the level’s intricate design offers a wealth of hiding possibilities. Props on a Plane is a challenging map, but it’s more than possible to seamlessly blend in. The dark lighting makes it tricky to see everything, giving the props a slight advantage if they do need to relocate. Knowing where the hunter is will be an important aspect for claiming victory.

15-year-old Cori Gauff just defeated one of her tennis idols, Venus Williams, in straight sets during a Monday first-round match at Wimbledon.
Gauff, who goes by “Coco,” is the youngest player to qualify for Wimbledon. She’s also the youngest woman to win a Wimbledon match since 1991, according to ESPN.
Gauff’s record-breaking career has already earned her an international following. She’s adding youngest Wimbledon qualifier to a list of other youngest-ever’s — at 13, she was the youngest to reach the U.S. Open girl’s final and at age 15, she was the youngest female to win in a qualifying match in the French Open. Her tennis career began at age eight.
Gauff follows in the footsteps of Venus and Serena Williams, who Gauff’s family and coaches credit for paving the path for a young black teenage girl. Originally from Atlanta, Gauff now lives in Delray Beach, Florida. She has trained at the Mouratoglou Academy in France since she was 10, and is expected to earn $1 million this year in sponsorships from New Balance, racket maker Head and the pasta company Barilla.

Wimbledon 2019: Who, When Does Cori 'Coco’ Gauff, 15, Play Next After Stunning Childhood Idol Venus Williams?

Coco Gauff took the first step of becoming the biggest sensation of Wimbledon.
The 15-year old American tennis player stunned Venus Williams, her childhood idol and a five-time Wimbledon champion, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in her first career Grand Slam match Monday.
Gauff entered the contest as the youngest competitor ever to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon, a year after she became the second youngest ever winner of the Junior Roland Garros at the French Open.
The next step on Gauff’s Wimbledon journey is a meeting with Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova on Wednesday, July 3, 2019. The time of the match is to be announced.
Here is a recap of the match from the Associated Press:
In a matchup of youth vs. experience, the youngest woman in the draw beat the oldest at Wimbledon.
Fifteen-year-old Coco Gauff beat five-time champion Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 in a first-round meeting between two players with a 24-year age gap on Court 1.
The 39-year-old Williams had won four of her seven Grand Slam titles before Gauff was even born in 2004.
The 313th-ranked Gauff is the youngest player to enter the main draw at Wimbledon since Laura Robson in 2009, having come through qualifying last week.
Gauff, playing in her first Grand Slam match, converted her fourth match point when Williams sent a forehand into the net, then broke into sobs before shaking hands with her opponent.

Cori Gauff, 15, Seizes Her Moment, Upsetting Venus Williams At Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England — Cori Gauff, a 15-year-old American who grew up admiring the Williams sisters, made her Wimbledon debut on Monday by defeating one of them.
Gauff’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over the five-time singles champion Venus Williams in the first round was remarkable not just for the score line but for the manner with which Gauff managed the moment.
She was unruffled from the start in her first main-draw Grand Slam singles match, responding to the 39-year-old Williams’s baseline power with ample power of her own and maintaining a tight grip on her service games.
“She did everything well today,” Williams said. “She put the ball in the court, which was much better than I did. She served well, moved well. It was a great match for her.”
Williams managed to break Gauff’s serve only once in the 1-hour-19-minute match. That break made the score 4-4 in the second set, but Gauff, the youngest woman to qualify for the Wimbledon main draw in the Open era, responded by breaking Williams straight back.
She then served out the victory, closing it out on her fourth match point. And after shaking Williams’s hand and exchanging words with her at the net, Gauff went to her chair, squatted down, put her head against the butt of her racket, and cried.
Gauff said in a postmatch interview that at the net with Williams “I told her thank you for everything that you did. I wouldn’t be here without you. I always wanted to tell her that.”
It was a debut to remember and to savor. Gauff has long been considered one of the world’s most promising players. Coached by her father, Corey, a former basketball point guard at Georgia State University, Gauff trains regularly at Patrick Mouratoglou’s tennis academy in France.
She was the youngest United States Open junior finalist in history in 2017, losing at age 13 to Amanda Anisimova, another American tennis prodigy. Gauff won the French Open junior title in 2018 at age 14, becoming the second youngest girls champion at Roland Garros after Martina Hingis.
There are no guarantees, but the talent was evident for anyone to see on the No. 1 Court on Monday.
“I think the sky’s the limit, it really is,” Williams said of Gauff.
Though it was a match between unseeded players, it was widely considered the most intriguing match of the day. Williams is ranked No. 44 and far from the peak of her powers at this stage, but she is still a dangerous player on grass, long her favorite surface.
She reached the final here most recently in 2017, but she won two of her five singles titles at the All England Club before Gauff was born. Williams and, above all, her younger sister Serena have been Gauff’s role models as she has set her sights high.
“I want to be the greatest of all time,” Gauff told ESPN at age 12.
For now, she is just beginning and will face a player with a very different skill set in the second round: Magdalena Rybarikova, a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2017.

It is to be noted that maintaining the same traditions culture and legacy Bombay Talkies in its new incarnation has introduced writer, actor and director Aazaad to create meaningful films and maintain the golden legacy founded by the pillar of Indian Cinema Rajnarayan Dube.
Rajnarayan Dube single-handedly architected the business angle of the entire industry which was yet to come. He supported various new theatres such as BN Sircar's New Theatres in Calcutta, V Shantaram's Prabhat Pictures, Homi Wadia's Wadia Movietone, Sohrab Modi's Minerva Movietone, LV Prasad's Prasad Labs and Pictures (Prasadwas an ex-technician from Bombay Talkies), SM Vasan's Gemini Pictures and Mehboob Khan's theatres, Tarachand Barjatya's Rajshri Productions (Barjatya served as a distribution manager for Bombay Talkies for the period of seven years). Dube supported went on to build a name for themselves in the industry. Rajnarayan Dube had a big vision for Indian Cinema. He wanted Indian film making to be a respectable profession. He thus stipulated that Bombay Talkies would only hire graduates. He hoped this move would legitimize the Indian film industry of the thirties and forties, and it certainly did. Besides this, Shri. Dube also wanted the Indian film industry to be inclusive of Indians from all states and sectors of life. Even though the movie company worked with European technicians, Shri. Dube would bring on Indian technicians and make sure that they learnt the art of movie making. He also brought a lot of Indian writers on-board so that movies could have an Indian cultural sensitivity and thus could appeal to a large number of people. This move gave rise to a whole new Indian profession, movie making.
In this 85th Anniversary event filmmaker, Aazaad said this is the high time to re-invent and restore the sanatan culture and values of Dev Bhasha Sanskrit to preserve our divine identity and existence. Aazaad roars in his baritone that India is not merely a piece of land but a divine entity, one should live and die for the motherland. We are the fortunate descendants of the great sages who had created Vedas, Upanishads and the ultimate wisdom when the whole world was living in primitive stages. We are Brahma in its true sense of meaning. For us, the whole world is our family. Our thoughts, actions, and voices represent and strengthen the world brotherhood, peace and wisdom. The greatest revolution is the self-revolution in the history of human evolution.
In this occasion writer, poet and head of the writing department of Bombay Talkies, Abhijit Ghatwari said in front of thousands of people gathered at the Bombay Talkies campus that the nationalism is the only life-saving energy for the survival of our great nation. Aham Brahmasmi, a masterpiece created by Aazaad is the ultimate answer to all the odds and re-establish the golden immortal Sanatan Bharat.
Guide
In this atmosphere of great excitement and promise, the creative director of Bombay Talkies Mousumi Chatterjee addressed the thousands of invitees with great remembrance of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, creator of Vande Mataram. Mousumi shared her thoughts with guests and said that Bengal was the experimental lab of nationalism. Today the situation of Bengal is very depressing, but with the emergence of nationalism and the creation of nationalistic Sanskrit film Aham Brahmasmi created by Aazaad will change the scenario very soon and sure.

'Warrior Queen Of Jhansi' Biopic Lands At Roadside Attractions

MOVIES
Roadside Attractions has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Swati Bhise’s The Warrior Queen of Jhansi, a biopic about a revolutionary 19th century Indian feminist icon, and is planning a fall release.
The historical epic — which stars Devika Bhise, Rupert Everett, Ben Lamb, Derek Jacobi, Jodhi May and Hindi actors Yatin Karyekar, Milind Gunaji, Ajinkya Deo and Arif Zakaria — tells the true story of the Rani, or Queen of Jhansi, a freedom fighter and feminist icon who, as a 24-year-old military commander in 1857 India, led a battle against the British Empire. Her insurrection shifted the balance of power in the region and set in motion the demise of the notorious British East India Company and the beginning of the British Raj under Queen Victoria.
"The Warrior Queen of Jhansi is an inspirational and powerful true story of a great leader who so clearly demands big-screen treatment,” Roadside co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff said Tuesday in a joint statement.
The film was directed, produced and co-written by Swati Bhise through her production company, Cayenne Pepper Productions. Devika Bhise, who also executive produced, and Olivia Emden are co-writers, as well.
The distribution deal with Roadside Attractions was brokered by CAA Media Finance.

Interview: Artist Chitra Ganesh Evokes 'Ghost Effect' Of Silent Cinema [Images]

When Asia Society Museum's 2006 group exhibition One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now toured to the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston after its New York run, the Houston Press singled out the contribution by artist Chitra Ganesh (a surreal mural that spilled into three dimensions) as "singular — simultaneously elegant and unsettling."
Those words could serve as an apt thumbnail introduction to Ganesh's art overall — paintings, drawings and installations that delve headlong into themes of female sexuality and aggression in ways that are equally playful and provocative, using imagery derived from Hindu mythology, Bollywood, comics and science fiction. What unites these disparate influences are the artist's formal gifts (her drawing ability in particular), which ensure that the work is as visually striking as it is conceptually freighted.
Ganesh's latest solo exhibition, The Ghost Effect in Real Time, on view at the Jack Tilton Gallery in New York City through June 23, finds her working through her themes in a new context, the world of silent movies. Her arresting wall-sized charcoal portraits of primordial screen icons like Theda Bara and Devika Rani have a spectral beauty that's ideal for evoking the long-lost world of the silents, and makes the exhibition's title seem only appropriate.
Reached via email, the New York-based artist (who just won a Fellowship in Fine Arts from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation) shared some insights into her new work with Asia Blog.
The Ghost Effect in Real Time seems to mark a new phase in your work. Are silent movies a recent interest of yours? What was the attraction of this imagery for you?
The works in The Ghost Effect in Real Time reflect a recent focus on charcoal drawings inspired by silent cinema, which has organically evolved from my drawing-based practice over the past several years. My work across media is unified by a keen interest in exploring intersections of mythic narratives, bodily excess, science fiction, and iconic representations of femininity.
I was initially drawn to the imagery and content of silent cinema last year, when I was preparing for an exhibition at Nature Morte Berlin. I became curious about historical/visual relationships that might have existed between Germany and India, and my research led me to assemble a body of images, largely derived from film stills, documenting a number of Indian-German silent cinema co-productions in the 1920s, between Himanshu Rai and Franz Osten, which culminated in a trilogy of films based on the life of the Buddha and scenes from the epic myth the Mahabharata.
I also learned that in this era, biologically female actresses were extremely difficult to come by, as acting in cinema threatened notions of appropriate middle-class femininity, and thus many of the earliest "actresses" were men playing female roles, young girls or children, and Desi (South Asian) actresses of Anglo-Indian femininity.
From this initial research, I was struck by salient narrative threads connecting a range of silent cinema across culture and continents. For example, narrative intersections among Orientalism, mythology and folklore, the passage of time, and science fiction/future cities simultaneously animated productions in India, Germany, Russia and the United States. Identifying the convergence of these narratives in what was then a cutting-edge shared technology, and seeing how silent cinema contributed to visualizing an iconic femininity that endures in contemporary visual culture today, gave me the momentum for creating a body of work that is a visual exploration of a historical/cultural moment.
One of the works refers to Raja Harishchandra, from 1913, which most scholars regard as the first Indian feature film. Is it just a coincidence that your new series coincides with the upcoming 100th anniversary of India's film industry?
The titles for the drawings based on silent film include specific information about the actresses, names of films referenced, and so forth, allowing the referential information to illuminate the context and content for the viewer. The drawing titled Raja Harishchandra presents a montage of stills from what has widely been considered India's first feature film, and one of the masterpieces of director Debashish Phalke, the "father of Indian cinema." It is just a coincidence that we happen to be coming upon the 100th anniversary of India's film industry.
However, in the midst of researching and executing this project I did begin to notice that there is a current surge of interest in explorations of early cinema within the contemporary film context itself. For example, Martin Scorsese's recent film Hugo (2011) invokes the work and imagines the disappointments of George Melies, while Paresh Mokashi's film Harishchandra Factory (2009) chronicles the personal and economic hardships Phalke faced. Both films explore the enduring legacy and often daunting challenges met by early pioneers of silent cinema, while films such as The Artist, and ongoing restorations of silent cinema classics such as Fritz Lang's Metropolis [right], also reveal a contemporary interest in exploring the silent period.
I was wondering if you could elaborate on the title The Ghost Effect in Real Time a little bit. There's something downright eerie about several of the images in this series — which the title seems to acknowledge…
The exhibition's title, The Ghost Effect in Real Time, on the one hand seeks to illuminate the haunting and emotionally evocative quality pulsing through early cinematic visions of femininity, exploration, bodily transformation, which move freely between breathtaking fantasy and the material constraints of quotidian existence.
It's also evocative of some key filmic techniques I observed as recurrent themes in the films I drew from, terms that shaped early cinema. The "ghost effect" refers to techniques of double exposure or in-camera superimposition, frequently deployed in early cinema to create the effect of a supernatural on-screen presence, a highly accelerated passage of time, or the appearance of visions or premonitions, often in circular vignettes. "Real time" refers to the the filmic technique of narrating actions or events that occur entirely within the span of time in which it is shown on screen.
In this way, the title also embodies the dialectic relationship in early cinema between fantastical, otherworldly narratives and the medium's reflection of early 20th-century modernity and the emergence of clock time.
Elements of the Haunted Documents section of this exhibition, like the large, disembodied eyes in #14, Althea [image #6, above], are immediately recognizable as your work, whereas in the silent movie series you seem to have effaced or sublimated your distinctive style. How conscious an artistic choice was that — did you deliberately try to "step out of the way" in these images?
Both the content and stylistic choices informing the charcoal drawings were the culmination of a few years of investigation and experimentation with the content and medium. I first used the large-scale charcoal drawing more when working on The Unknowns, a series of nine large mixed-media works on canvas that comprised a site-specific installation at the Travancore Palace in New Delhi for the Indian Art Summit in 2009. For this exhibition, I was interested in mapping the visual relationships between anonymity and iconic representations in producing narratives of femininity and female sexuality.
One work from the series was based on old black-and-white photographs of my partner's mother, which were rendered in charcoal and included sculptural elements [image #5, above]. I then created three charcoal portraits of iconic actresses from the Indian-German silent cinema period [such as Devika Rani, right], a series which has led to a full-scale exploration of both feminine icons as well as thematic aspects of these films.
The painterly style of these works is very much connected to the gesture and brushstroke that characterized my earlier paintings on canvas. In this instance, I was very interested in how both charcoal on paper, as well as black-and-white film, rely so strongly on light as a primary medium. I was interested in the potential of translating the notion of light as a primary medium, and what this translation between film and drawing would look like.
On the other hand, there is some thematic consistency here because powerful, even fearsome female figures have been a recurring subject for you. Is it too much to see icons like Devika Rani, Theda Bara and Fritz Lang's robot woman as spiritual cousins or descendants of the goddesses and demons you've painted in the past?
There is definitely a consistency in the themes and content explored across my works which is a pivotal part of this project as well — namely, my interest in exploring stories and icons of femininity or sexuality that remain at the edges of canonical understandings of history, literature and art.
I was haunted by the frequency of bodily transformations inherent in early cinema's depictions of femininity — with characters moving freely between corporeal matter, spirit, animal and automaton. These moments provided me with links across history and time to the kinds of iconographies I have been interested in developing and giving voice to in my drawing-based practice across media.

“They helped us launch our business. They are our CMO and our CTO. Would recommend to anyone.” Erica Tsypin, Washington D.C., Co-Founder & COO, Steer
“Our success in jumpstarting Steer’s business is one of our proudest accomplishments this year. Steer is an electric car subscription startup that asked us to increase their activations. Basically, our job was to generate new active members, which not only meant encouraging more users to download the app, upload a license, and get approved, but it also meant delivering a car to a member’s door, having them drive that car and leaving a review. We were able to demonstrate signup traction for Steer and help them launch in under three months.”

Interview with NoGood CEO and Growth Lead Mostafa Elbermawy
Yvonne Leow: To kick things off, how did you get into growth?
Mostafa Elbermawy: Well, I went to school for archaeology, but hieroglyphics weren’t paying the bills, so I taught myself how to code and started a web design studio after college. I started building websites for clients, and they started asking me how to drive more users to their sites to help grow their business.
I started tinkering with growth out of curiosity, and eventually joined the digital experience team at American Express. That job helped me gain some marketing and growth experience, and I ended up falling in love with that part of the job.
